One of the oldest oaks in Europe, the oldest oak in the Baltic. Encyclopedic sources give different estimates of its age: 2000-1500 years. An exact age determination is extremely difficult because the core of the trunk has rotted and been removed. The oak is located in the Zarasai region of Lithuania, in the village of Stelmuže, near the border with Latvia. The height of the oak is 23 meters, the diameter at the widest part is 3.5 m (the girth reaches 13.5 m). The tree has survived several historical periods in the history of the region, possibly seeing the Crusaders and the Swordsmen. According to legend, during pagan times, Lithuanians worshiped Perkunas under it. Photo by Aleksandrs Timofejev.Ìý
