Basarbovo Monastery

The Monastery of Saint Dimitar Basarbowski is a Bulgarian Orthodox cave monastery located near the city of Ruse in northeastern Bulgaria. It is the only active cave monastery in modern Bulgarian history and was designated a historical landmark in 1978. The monastery gained prominence in the 17th century after the death of Saint Dimitar Basarbovski, who is mentioned by Saint Paisiy Hilendarski in his book *Istoriya Slavyanobolgarskaya*. Saint Dimitar Basarbovski, a shepherd, lived an ascetic life in the cave monastery and passed away in 1685. He was initially buried in the village church, but during the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774, General Pyotr Saltykov arranged to transfer his relics to Russia. The journey passed through Romania, where the region was experiencing a plague epidemic. Legend has it that when the saint's relics reached Bucharest, the plague ceased. The townspeople requested that the general leave the saint's body there, and today his relics are kept in the Church of St. Constantine and Elena in Bucharest.
